When you think of Greece, what comes to mind? Probably whitewashed houses in Mykonos, sunsets in Santorini, or the buzz of Athens’ rooftops. But our recent collaboration with WORKFROMGREECE.GR took us somewhere very different—somewhere few digital nomads have ever worked from before.

This past month, Tursi Digital Nomads brought an international group of remote professionals to the small village of Raftis in the Peloponnese, a region that feels like the soul of Greece: untouched, authentic, and full of stories. Together with WORKFROMGREECE.GR, we wanted to redefine what “working from Greece” really means—and show that connection, creativity, and community can thrive in the most unexpected corners of the country.

A Hidden Gem with an Open Heart

Mountainous Arcadia doesn’t shout for attention—but once you arrive, it quietly takes your breath away. Stone villages climb up the hillsides, olive trees stretch endlessly to the horizon, and locals greet you with a warm “Kalimera” as if you’ve always belonged there.

Our home for the month was a stone-built resort in Raftis village, transformed into a cozy coliving and coworking space. It wasn’t luxury in the conventional sense, but it had something much rarer: authenticity. Within a short walk, you could stumble upon a family-run restaurant that doubled as a café and mini market, where the owner insisted you try her meatballs “on the house.” In another corner of the square, an 80-year-old man raised his glass and taught us the proper way to say “cheers” in Greek—“Yamas!”

It was simple, unpolished, and absolutely perfect.

Local Life, Real Connections

Community has always been at the heart of Tursi Digital Nomads, but here it pulsed even stronger. During our “Meet the Locals” event, we gathered around the table with local authorities—business owners, the mayor, and members of the municipality—for an open and honest discussion about the challenges and strengths of Mountainous Arcadia. Everyone spoke from the heart, sharing ideas, hopes, and realities that made us appreciate the effort they put to make their town compatible to the modern needs.

Fellow nomads became friends faster than usual—maybe because the setting invited honesty, maybe because the quietness left room for real conversation.

Every moment felt grounded, as we were participating in something living and local.

From Coworking to Connection

Of course, the real magic unfolded after work hours. The curated experiences we organized, created moments designed to weave culture, nature, and community into our days.

We learned to make traditional pita from scratch & chicken with local pasta (and made a delicious mess in the process), during a cooking workshop in a family kitchen.

We spent an afternoon at a local winery during harvest season, learning about the traditions of Arcadian winemaking and sharing an aperitivo right beside the vineyards as the sun dipped behind the hills.

On the weekend we went rafting and hiking along the Lousios River, where Zeus was bathed as a baby, according to mythology tales, surrounded by emerald forests and the echo of running water—one of those days that make you forget screens exist altogether.

And then there was our visit to Arcadiani, a multifunctional farm where we cooked, laughed, and baked traditional “wedding bread” under the gentle guidance of the most wonderful yiayia (grandma) you could ever meet. Her patience and warmth reminded us that some recipes carry more than flavor—they carry memory.

These weren’t activities to tick off a list. They were stories in motion, openings into another way of living.

Rethinking What “Working From Greece” Can Be

What makes Syros so special?

We never would have thought Syros would captivate us like this. But here we are on the ferry, watching the pastel-colored houses of Ermoupoli fade into the distance, and, man, we’ve got a pretty big lump in our throat.

As digital nomads, we’ve traveled to a lot of places, but this dreamy island has sneaked its way deep into our hearts and will always hold a special place in our memories.

But what makes Syros so special? Honestly? It’s hard to put it into words. If we had to describe it, we’d say Syros is more than just a typical Greek beauty. Syros is a feeling – a place where you instantly feel comfortable and at home. Maybe it’s the people we met there or just the peaceful island life in the off-season. Syros has surprised us in so many ways and fundamentally changed our thinking about certain things. One thing’s for sure: Syros – we’ll meet again someday!

Why Syros is a True Gem for Digital Nomads

The small island of Syros, in the heart of the Aegean, might have been unknown to many. We hadn’t heard of it either until we were invited by Work from Greece.

Luckily, we got to know this special place last winter – an opportunity we’re incredibly grateful for. But why is Syros, despite its extraordinary charm, almost undiscovered by tourists?

We asked ourselves the same question and came up with five reasons why digital nomads should visit this hidden Mediterranean gem.

Work and Play in Balance

A trip to Syros isn’t just a great chance for digital nomads to work without distractions, but also to enjoy the island’s perks. Whether you start your day with a walk through the narrow streets of Ano Syros or energize yourself with a yoga session on the city beach – you couldn’t ask for a more balanced way to start a workday. Then, it’s off to a cozy café to be productive alone or with other nomads in mild Mediterranean temperatures.

Our everyday life on Syros was a balanced mix of a regular work routine and family time. In the mornings, Anni used the quiet hours to work with focus, while Thommy and the kids explored the playgrounds near the co-working hub. We used every spare minute to wander the small streets of Ermoupoli and take trips into the surrounding nature. And one thing we can say for sure: our work-life balance has never worked better.

Pleasant Climate Even in Winter

When you think of Greece, don’t you instantly think of bright sunshine and summery temperatures?

On Syros, the third-largest island of the Cyclades, this expectation is certainly not disappointed. Sitting with an open laptop on a sunny terrace while the kids play happily in the background? Sounds like a dream, but it’s reality when you choose a nomadic life on Syros.

Even in winter, the temperature here is a pleasant 15 degrees Celsius – perfect for working outdoors or relaxing at the beach after a day’s work. In summer, temperatures rise to an average of 28 degrees Celsius, ideal for ending the day with a cool drink and a breathtaking sunset.

Authentic Greece Without Mass Tourism

In contrast to many other Greek dream islands, tourism has not played a significant role in Syros so far.

Everything here is still authentic and untouched by the tourism boom. Although there are fast ferries and a national airport connected to the international airport in Athens, Syros is mainly visited by long-term travelers or locals. Only a few day tourists find their way to Syros, which makes the island unique.

For years, the island has thrived on shipbuilding, agriculture, and the production of delicious sweets, famous throughout the Mediterranean. Consequently, Syros is lively all year round and fortunately doesn’t fall into a winter sleep like Sleeping Beauty and other neighboring islands during the off-season. Another plus: Due to the low number of visitors, Syros is much more unspoiled than other islands in the Aegean and therefore also offers lower accommodation prices.

Small but Mighty

If you’re a digital nomad looking for an inspiring workplace, you should definitely consider Syros as a destination. Yes, it’s true. The island isn’t particularly big, but that’s what makes it so interesting. In just 20 minutes, you can cross the island by car and quickly get to secluded beaches, fishing villages, and green bays. The marble-paved squares at the harbor give the cityscape an elegant charm and invite leisurely strolls. Walking through the alleys of Ermoupoli, one is immersed in a different time – a time full of culture and stories.

A Fusion of Contrasts

Syros has many faces. Even the main town, built on two hills, has a dual identity. Ermoupoli is imposing and grand, crowned by an orthodox church. On one hand, you’ll find traditional Greek culture: narrow alleys with pastel-colored houses and shutters exude Mediterranean flair. On the other hand, the island impresses with modern comfort and trendy restaurants. The interplay of tradition and modernity makes Syros a unique travel destination that will enchant every visitor in its own way.

A Treasure Chest Waiting to be Discovered

And then there’s the breathtaking nature of Syros: picturesque bays, crystal clear water, and impressive landscapes offer a beautiful contrast to historic Ermoupoli. Along the coast, you’ll find idyllic beaches for relaxation. But Syros has even more to offer: the island is a true paradise for hiking enthusiasts. Impressive hiking trails lead through lush vegetation and offer breathtaking views of the sea. Whether along the coast or inland, there are countless opportunities to explore the beauty of nature.

Sustainable and authentic cuisine

The Greek delicacies are a reason to visit this country. The cuisine from Syros, with its local dishes, is even better. In a cooking class at Villa Maria, we got to know the culinary tradition of Greece from a completely different perspective. Elisa Mavropoulou showed us a variety of Greek dishes that are rarely found in restaurants. The kitchen at Villa Maria mainly uses a variety of vegetables, legumes, and herbs that grow on the island and adapts to the seasons. Cooking with what the land offers is an essential part of Greek culture, making each dish unique and authentic.

Syros wine makes you happy

Besides the famous drink Ouzo, Syros also has amazing wines from unique and rare grape varieties of the Cyclades that you just have to try. During our visit to a wine tasting in the hilly south of Chrousa, we got to know the small family winery OuSyra better.

The winemaker, Edward Maitland-Makgill-Crichton, originally from Scotland, has been living on the island for over 30 years, where he also met his Greek wife Eileen. Together, they founded a winery that specializes in tradition, environmental protection, and innovations. OuSyra, which means “happy”, perfectly shows their love for Syros.

How to Get to Syros?

There are various options for reaching this beautiful island. From Athens, you can either take a short flight or opt for the slightly longer, but scenic, ferry journey. Our adventure started in Frankfurt, where we flew to Athens with Aegean Airlines, Greece’s largest airline and a proud member of the Star Alliance. From there, we chose to continue our journey with Blue Star Ferries. The trip from Athens’ largest port takes about 4 hours, and there are two connections daily. If you’re already on another Greek island, you can of course also catch a ferry to Syros from there.

After three weeks on Syros, we can confidently say that Syros was more to us than just a regular holiday destination – it became a home, a workplace, and a playground for our children.

We learned to take life slower, appreciate the small things, and have made new friendships with other nomads. Embracing Remote Work in the Heart of Greek Culture and Natural Beauty

The rise of digital nomads and remote workers is something that’s been talked about for years now – especially since 2020. Living this lifestyle for 5+ years now, we’ve seen a drastic increase in people looking to work and live remotely and we think this is so exciting!

Because of the increase in people like us working remotely more and more destinations are popping up as ideal digital nomad destinations and we see this as a win/win situation for digital nomads and remote workers alike as well as the destinations that get put on the “nomad map”.

We like to believe that there is a big difference between the standard holiday visitor and a digital nomad who is coming to a new location.

From our experience, a holiday visitor is in a destination for a short period of time to enjoy all the highlights and have a great time. In Greece, we believe this often means visiting nice hotels, enjoying the sunshine, swimming in the pool and the sea, eating lots of good food, and doing their own thing while enjoying the destination.

A digital nomad, on the other hand, is often staying for an extended amount of time (1-3 months or longer) and wants to immerse themselves in the local culture and people and leave a positive impact on the destination while also connecting with other digital nomads in the area.

We’re not saying there’s anything wrong with either type of travelling, we’re simply just saying there’s a difference.

This is where the Peloponnese community can work together with digital nomads and remote workers to create an up-and-coming location for people who want to work remotely and experience the Greek culture in one of the most beautiful and underrated parts of the country.

Why the Peloponnese is perfect for Digital Nomads

The allure of the Peloponnese

As the community of digital nomads expands, the destinations for us (digital nomads) to visit and live in are also going to grow as well. We recently visited Peloponnesus for a month and explored different parts of the peninsula to see what this place has to offer and whether or not it could be a good hot spot for nomads – and we were very impressed with what we found! This part of Greece has so much to offer and we can’t wait to see it as a stable on the digital nomad map.

Scenic beauty

From the sea to the lush countryside, home to the Kalamata Olive, you can’t help but stop and appreciate how beautiful this part of the country is. There are so many hidden gems like the Polylimnio Waterfalls, a stunning coastline with crystal clear water, history that goes back thousands of years in history, incredibly delicious food, and the warmest and most welcoming people we’ve experienced in a long time.

Cultural richness

One thing we absolutely loved about Peloponnesus is the culture and the people. Whether we were walking the streets of Kalamata or exploring one of the coastal towns in the area we saw Greek culture come to life.

At times it feels like you’re taken back in time in this beautiful country that is filled with cultural richness at a time when other countries are starting to let go of their cultures a bit, or at least change the culture as we’ve known it up until now.

It’s admirable to be in a country that has a rich history and culture that is proud to share it.

Historic sites and landmarks

You could spend years in the Peloponnese and probably only see a fraction of the historic sites and landmarks that are found here.

One of our favourite day trips was a visit to the Old Navarino Fortress where we hiked up to the Fortress and got one of the best views of Voidokilia Beach. An incredible mix of history and natural beauty!

This is just an example of the places you can visit because you can honestly go anywhere in the area and be blown away by a historic site or landmark.

Culinary experiences

This one is pretty self-explanatory, right? I mean we all love Greek food, don’t we? Anywhere we went, we had incredible food! From the small town of Marathopoli to Kalamata, we didn’t have a single bad meal. For real!

We also had the chance to go on a food tour with Mama’s Flavors, a local food tour company in Kalamata and the experience was incredible.

It might be because most of the food is locally sourced, made with love, or just straight-up Greek magic but the food just seems to taste better in Greece.

Whatever it is, we’re all for it because every chance we get to try and taste local delicious food, we’ll take it. It’s just another reason to spend more time here in Greece.

Digital-Nomad friendly infrastructure

Co-working spaces

The nomad infrastructure is something that is slowly growing in Kalamata and the Peloponnese as the community sees an influx of digital nomads.

Right now, House by Phaos (a coworking space in Kalamata) is the hub for new digital nomads coming to Kalamata. Nelly has done a great job at providing a space for newcomers and she has already expanded to a second location called Officium.

Both House of Phaos and Officium are Nomad 365 certified. We’re hopeful that this place will start to take off soon as digital nomads start to learn about Kalamata and Peloponnese.

The infrastructure is ready – now we just need the nomads to come! We’re sure this will continue to grow and improve as more nomads arrive and the demand for Coworking spaces increases.

Potential for new spaces

There are also lots of opportunities here in Kalamata for more coworking spaces as well as Coliving spaces to pop up. The same goes for Coliving and Coworking spaces in other parts of the Peloponnese – and that’s exactly why we’re hosting the first-ever Pop Up Coliving in Marathopoli in October 2024! The point of the event is to bring digital nomads together while enjoying this beautiful part of Greece! During the month, over 30 digital nomads will colive and cowork together at the Pop Up Coliving in Marathopoli (there may still be room for you to join!). We’ve already tested the place out ourselves to make sure it’s nomad-proof and we know it’s going to be an amazing experience!

Nomad 365

Speaking of being nomad-proof… Nomad 365 is a great example of the infrastructure and how digital nomad-friendly places are growing in the Peloponnese.

Nomad 365 is basically a platform that issues certifications to places of accommodation that are nomad-friendly. They help make sure places (Airbnb, hotels, and other types of accommodations) are suitable for digital nomads. In order to get approved, the places have to live up to certain criteria such as good, stable wifi, a designated work area, etc,

We stayed at Tiny Apartment in Kalamata and it had everything we needed from a an ergonomic work chair, good wifi, to ring lights to anything else you could imagine you would need while working from your “home”.

Nomad 365 also certifies coworking spaces and cafés so keep your eyes peeled for this as you wander around Kalamata and the Peloponnese so it’s easy for you to find good work spots outside of your apartment

Checking for the Nomad 365 certification is a great way to make sure you always have good internet, comfort, and everything else you need to enjoy working remotely from a new destination.

Cost of living and quality of life

Living expenses

When deciding on a place to base yourself as a digital nomad, the cost of living (as well as safety and good wifi) are usually always at the top of the list. Of course, you want to live somewhere beautiful with good nature, community, and lots of things to do but the living expenses is usually one of the deciding factors.

When you look outside of the typical tourist spots in Greece, the Peloponnese and Kalamata it is quite affordable – especially compared to Western Europe!

From renting an apartment to groceries your money goes a long way when you compare it to a lot of other digital nomad hot spots in Europe. Also, the quality here is really good (both in terms of accommodation and produce!). So you pay less but you also get better quality.

Work-life balance

Work-life balance is an interesting topic because, at the end of the day, it’s up to the individual to create this. But a location can definitely help with a good work-life balance.

For example, in Kalamata if you stay near the coworking space it’s a short walk to work. If you want to go enjoy a nice lunch meal there are plenty of great options nearby. From the city, you have plenty of great day and weekend trips you can do and you can easily walk to the beach before or after work as it is only 20 minutes away.

In general, it does seem like Greek people do work a lot but they also take time to enjoy time with family and friends when they are off.

With good weather, food, and culture you will find yourself wanting to be outside more and spending more time with other people so you can really manage to have a good work-life balance here in the Peloponnese.

Challenges and Solutions

Cultural adaptations

I think one of the easiest ways to feel connected to the locals and the country is to adapt to the culture.

It doesn’t have to be big things but there are little things you can do to adapt to the Greek way to make the most of your time in Greece!

It can be as simple as learning how to say “hello” and “thank you” in Greek. Going for dinner a bit later in the day. Chatting up your local barista while you order a Freddo Cappuccino. Visiting the local market in Kalamata.

One thing we loved about this part of Greece was how easy it was to make local connections. Anywhere we’d go locals would ask us where we were from, what we did for a living, and how we liked their country and food (especially the olive oil!).

If you want to meet and connect with locals, you definitely can!

There are all seemingly small things but they go a long way. The more time you spend in the Peloponnese and Kalamata, the more you’ll get to know the culture and people there!

Language barriers

Like any country, we do believe there can be language barriers at times but from public transport to restaurants and everything in between we were never really in a position where we couldn’t work through a problem.

Most of the younger generation speaks English and so does anyone working in the tourism sector or customer service. And with smartphones, it’s a lot easier to translate when needed.

But we do think there are things we can do as digital nomads to help with the language barrier. If it’s talking slower or sometimes simplifying sentences. Even learning a few basic Greek words goes a long way.

It’s also a good way to immerse yourself in the culture of the country by learning some of the local language!

Future prospect of Digital Nomads in the Peloponnese

Vision for the Peloponnese as a Digital Nomad hotspot

With an airport right outside of Kalamata and a beautiful city, there is tons of potential for this part of Greece to become a new hotspot for digital nomads!

As Kalamata grows in popularity, we’re sure nomads will also find smaller communities along the coast in the other cities and towns in the Peloponnese.

We’ll also be hosting the first Pop Up Coliving in Marathopoli for a month in October 2024 (starting on October 5th)! This will be a good way for nomads to get together and get a taste of this part of Greece.

Potential for growth and sustainability

This is one thing the local government, the municipalities, and the tourism board will have to work together to do. Bringing digital nomads and remote workers to a destination is good if the location is ready for it. That means having the infrastructure set in place for it – both physically and digitally.

Having good public transportation, community managers for digital nomads, and an online platform with information for digital nomads is something that is super helpful and important for nomads in order to consider a destination for their next temporary home base.

Some of this is already set in place in Peloponnese but we do think some improvement can be made. In order for Kalamata to be a sustainable and responsible destination for both digital nomads and the locals, it’s important that initiatives are taken to “protect” the current culture and cost of living.

Especially the latter we think is very important in order for nomads and locals to co-exist and have a positive impact on one another. We’ve sadly seen in a lot of other places that over-tourism mixed with digital nomads (not just one or the other) can negatively impact the cost of living for locals who then no longer want nomads in their city or town.

This is very important because as nomads, we do not wish to have a negative impact on a destination. Quite the opposite.

Putting things in place like price ceilings on rent and setting up events where locals and nomads can mingle are examples of how everyone can benefit from turning a destination into a digital nomad hot spot.

So far this is working really well and we hope the authorities and the tourism board will help continue this so that Kalamata and Peloponnese can continue to be a sustainable destination for nomads.

Crete is a true paradise known for its picturesque beaches, untamed natural beauty, enchanting culinary experiences, and a history that spans thousands of years. Being a digital nomad on this captivating island is like living in a dream where you can blend work with outstanding nature and cultural experiences.

Why work from Crete?

Let’s start with the basics: Why should you work from Crete? With so many great digital nomad destinations around the world, you might wonder what makes Crete so special. Besides offering stunning views, Crete also has everything a digital nomad needs in terms of amenities and infrastructure. Let’s break down some of the aspects that, in my opinion, make Crete the optimal destination for digital nomads.

Ideal weather conditions

If you wish to escape the autumn, winter or early spring months but still stay in Europe, then Crete is the perfect place to go. Crete is the southernmost island in Greece with mild winters and hot summers. I experienced October and November in Crete and was greeted with sun and temperatures around 20-25 degrees. Crete, basking in 300 days of sunshine annually, stands out as one of the best destinations in Europe for consistently excellent weather throughout the year.

Rich history and culture

Crete is steeped in history and culture, with a heritage that dates back thousands of years. As a digital nomad in Crete, you’ll have the opportunity to explore ancient ruins, visit museums, and engage with the welcoming Cretan community to learn about their traditions and way of life.

Digital Nomad Communities

Greece has become increasingly popular among digital nomads, leading to the emergence of communities and coworking spaces that cater to remote workers. These hubs offer opportunities to network, collaborate, and socialize with like-minded individuals from around the world.

Ι can highly recommend the coworking space WorkHub in Chania. Besides desks and meeting rooms they also manage a Facebook and a Whatsapp group that connects digital nomads in Chania with joint dinners and events.

Incredible landscapes

Vibrant cities, sleepy coastal towns, turquoise beaches and even snow-capped mountains that’s perfect for hiking. Crete’s diversity is truly unparalleled, making this island a perfect place to stay!

What surprised me the most about Crete was its legendary beaches. From the iconic pink sands of Elafonissi to remote coves in southern Crete that have barely been touched by tourists, there’s always a place to explore and unwind.

The island’s natural beauty is breathtaking, with majestic gorges like the Samaria Gorge, towering mountain peaks, and picturesque villages to explore. As a digital nomad, you have the opportunity to experience the unique combination of mountains and sea, seclusion and community that this island has to offer.

Exquisite cuisine

Did you know Cretans consume the most olive oil annually than any other European destination? Or that they can grow avocados and even bananas?

Greek food is a reason alone to visit this country, and the Cretan cuisine is even better with its unique local dishes. Cretan cuisine is renowned for its freshness and flavor. You can savor local delicacies, farm-fresh produce, and traditional dishes that reflect the island’s rich culinary heritage. My favorites dishes are the Dakos salad (rusk bread topped with tomatoes, creamy myzithra cheese and herbs), kolokythoanthi (stuffed zucchini flowers), Cretan salad (Greek salad with rusk), skioufichta (handmade pasta) and boureki (potato and zucchini pie).

For Cretans, food is a way of life, with an emphasis on simplicity, sustainability, fresh local produce, respect for tradition and (most importantly) generosity. When visiting a family-owned restaurant you will most likely be served generous portions, some extra bread, their own olive oil, and dessert on the house, accompanied by a small bottle of raki.

Affordable cost
of living

Greece offers a relatively affordable cost of living compared to many Western countries.

You can find reasonably priced accommodations and dine out without breaking the bank.

Reliable wifi and internet speed

Greece has made significant investments in its internet infrastructure in recent years, ensuring reliable and high-speed internet connections in urban and even some rural areas. I never found myself without internet connection during my time in Crete, except for a few times in the mountains.

Safety and hospitality

Greece is known for its hospitality and friendliness toward tourists and expats. It’s generally considered a safe country, providing a welcoming and secure environment for remote workers.

Where to stay as a digital nomad in Crete

Crete is a big island with so much to explore. I would recommend staying in one of the bigger towns such as Chania, Rethymno or Heraklion. They are all big enough to have great cafes and restaurants, coworking spaces and many accommodation options – but are still small enough to be walkable and offer a sense of community.

My warmest recommendations go to Chania, as this was my home base when working from Crete.

I really fell in love with the town, its digital nomad community and WorkHub coworking space.

If you are looking for seaside accommodation while also staying close to Chania center, then Proimos Maisonnettes in Platanias village is a good option!

How to get to Crete

Crete has two international airports, in Chania and Heraklion, and regular domestic flights to Athens.

That being said, it’s easy to get to Crete – you just have to decide which airport to travel to! Whichever you choose, a safe airline option is Aegean.

Aegean Airlines is the largest Greek airline and is a great option when booking flights both domestically and internationally.

How to get around Crete

When it comes to exploring the diverse beauty of Crete, having the right means of transportation is essential. While the island does have public transportation options like buses, these usually only connect the bigger towns.

For a truly immersive experience on Crete, I highly recommend renting a car. Having your own vehicle allows you to set your own schedule and venture off the beaten path to discover hidden gems and picturesque villages that may be inaccessible by public transport. Crete’s road network is well-maintained and offers stunning scenic routes, making it a joy to drive around the island.

I rented my car through Pan Car and it was a seamless experience. They were very helpful and flexible!

Take a cooking class

Crete is renowned for its delicious Mediterranean cuisine, and what better way to truly savor it than by taking a hands-on cooking class? I did mine at The Olive Farm and it was an incredible experience.

The Olive farm is a small farm located in a tiny mountain village outside Chania.

The cooking class took place in their incredible garden, where they grow everything from olives to bananas.

Thanks to a local chef I learned the secrets behind traditional Cretan dishes and gained insights into the local ingredients and cooking techniques.

Visit a raki distillery

You can’t go to Crete without encountering raki, or as they call it in western Crete: tsikoudia. Tsikoudia is a strong, clear brandy made from distilled pomace (crushed grapes, skins and seeds) left over from the grape harvest.

It holds a special place in Cretan culture, and a visit to a local distillery provides an authentic glimpse into this cherished tradition.

I visited I.F. Peroulakis distillery and got to witness this fascinating process of transforming locally sourced grapes into liquid gold. I can highly recommend it!

Village hopping

If you want to experience the true authenticity of the Chania area, you have to visit the Apokoronas villages. The Apokoronas villages are a collection of 34 settlements either by the coast or in the valleys of the legendary White Mountains.

My favorite village was Gavalochori. Here you can experience the slow Cretan life, eat an incredible lunch at Monica’s Tavern or pay a visit to the small shop selling crafts from local artists.

Hiking the Samaria Gorge

Samaria Gorge is the longest gorge in Greece and forms part of the E4 hiking trail that traverses Europe. Hiking the Samaria Gorge is a must-do when in Crete!

Samaria Gorge is a UNESCO–protected Biosphere Reserve with 450 species of plant and animal life. The entire hike is 16 km, and along the way you will pass 22 freshwater springs, an abandoned village and several resting areas – all at the same time as having impressive 100 meter tall mountains on each side of you.

Even though it’s possible to do this hike on your own, I can highly recommend joining a tour or hiring a private guide from Trekking Hellas. Besides the obvious advantage of learning more about the area and all its do’s and don’ts, a guided tour includes transfer. This is great as the hike is one way: the starting point and ending point is at opposite sides of the gorge.

Explore the south coast by boat

Exploring the captivating south coast of Crete promises an unforgettable adventure. This lesser-known part of the island offers a taste of authentic Cretan life and some of the most breathtaking natural beauty you’ll encounter.

There are several places along the coast only accessible by boat. For example the enchanting coastal village Loutro, or my favorite beach in Crete: Marmara beach. Renting a boat, or taking a private boat trip, with Notos Mare is therefore the ultimate way to discover the south coast!

I can highly recommend staying at the south coast for a few days to explore its uniqueness to the fullest. I stayed a week in Hora Sfakion which was a great base to explore from.

Explore the incredible beaches

When it comes to top attractions in Crete, you probably already know about the beaches. With tropical blue water and soft white sand, Crete is home to some of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen.

My personal favorites are:

● Balos beach

● Falassarna beach

● Elafonissi beach

● Preveli beach

● Marmara beach

While these beaches are must-see places in Crete, I just want to add that during the summer months they get too full.

Not only is it not going to be the experience you were expecting, but you’ll be contributing to putting the ecosystems at risk. As a digital nomad, you have a great opportunity here to visit these beaches during shoulder season.

Who wants to fight over sunbeds with tourists anyway?!

Visit in May-June or September-October and get rewarded with better prices, fewer people and great weather!

Visit an olive farm

Visiting an olive farm in Crete is an enriching experience that allows you to delve into the heart of the island’s rich agricultural heritage and witness the centuries-old tradition of olive oil production, which is deeply intertwined with Cretan culture.

During my time in Crete, I visited Biolea – a family-owned company, which combines traditional and modern techniques to produce amazing organic olive oil. This was one of the best experiences I had in Crete! Having the opportunity to learn from knowledgeable local farmers and olive oil experts, sharing their insights into the cultivation of olive trees and the art of producing high-quality olive oil, was something I will never forget.

Go on a wine tasting

Did you know they make incredible wine in Crete? Crete’s winemaking tradition dates back thousands of years, and today, the island boasts a thriving wine industry known for its indigenous grape varieties and innovative winemakers.

I highly recommend doing a wine tasting while visiting Crete. I did mine at the incredible Karavitakis Winery outside of Chania.

During the wine tasting experience, I was guided by a passionate and knowledgeable sommelier who introduced me to a range of Cretan wines, from crisp whites to robust reds and fresh rosés. They shared the stories behind each wine, offering insights into the winemaking process and the cultural significance of wine in Crete. An experience I’ll cherish for a lifetime!

Introduced in 2021, the Digital Nomad Visa for Greece allows people who are not citizens of the European Union or European Economic Area and who work remotely to legally live and work in Greece for up to one year. It also allows you to bring your immediate family members with you, as long as you meet all the requirements. So if you’ve been toying with the idea of becoming a digital nomad in Greece, let’s have a look at the steps you need to follow to make that dream come true.

Who can become a digital nomad in Greece?

If you are an EU or EEA citizen, you have the right to enter and move freely within Greece, according to EU law. For third-party nationals (ie non-EU or EEA), you can apply for a Digital Nomad Visa letting you live and work in Greece hassle-free, according to the following:

You must not be employed or engaged in any business activity in Greece.
You must have clients or be employed by a company located outside of Greece.
You have to be able to provide your services and fulfil your work responsibilities using a stable internet connection and a laptop, which includes information and communication technology.
If you are self-employed, you need to provide evidence of your business activity, corporate purpose and business address, while also noting that your business cannot be registered in Greece.
You must prove that you earn at least €3,500 (after taxes) as the main applicant for the Digital Nomad Visa for Greece or have sufficient resources for the length of your stay. If you plan on extending your residency permit to your partner/spouse or child, you need to account for additional finances. For instance, for a spouse or partner, the minimum financial requirement will go up to €4,200. Additionally, for each child the requirement will increase by €525. In other words, for you, your spouse and one child, you will need to be earning €4,725 (after taxes) a month and so on.

How do you apply for a Digital Nomad Visa for Greece?

Applications for a Greek Digital Nomad Visa are made through your nearest Greek consular authority. You can submit your request via email or registered letter. The consulate is obliged to confirm receipt and the status of your application within 10 days. If your application is successful, the Greek Ministry of Migration and Asylum will issue your visa.

Your Digital Nomad Visa for Greece will be valid for one year. When this period is over, you may apply for a Digital Nomad Residence Permit to extend your stay for another two years, as long as you still satisfy the visa requirements of your original application.

What documents do you need to apply for a Digital Nomad Visa in Greece?

As a Type-D Visa, the Greek Digital Nomad Visa requires the following supporting documents to be included in your application:

Declaration Letter
Proof of Employment
Proof of Sufficient Funds
Greek Digital Nomad Fee

Declaration Letter: A formal statement declaring that the applicant intends to use their national entry visa for remote work and will not engage in any employment or freelance services for a Greek-based employer.
Proof of Employment, which could be proven by:
- an open-ended contract of employment or independent services or proof of employment with an employer, natural or legal person, who is established outside the Greek Territory, or in case of a fixed-term contract, with a remaining duration covering the period of the granted national visa.
  or
- an open-ended contract of employment or independent services or, in the case of a fixed-term employment contract, with a remaining duration covering the period of validity of the granted visa, in case the third-country national is self-employed with more than one employer established outside Greece.
  or
- information on your status in the company, as well as information on the trade name, registered office, field of activity, and corporate purpose of the company in case you are self-employed in your own company, which is outside the Greek Territory.
Proof of Sufficient Funds: Evidence that you have sufficient resources at a stable income level to cover your living expenses during your stay in the country, without burdening the national social welfare system. Sufficient Funds can be proved by the contract of employment or independent services or employment certificate or by a bank account.
Greek Digital Nomad Fee: The application fee you’ll need to pay will be a total of €75 plus an administrative fee of €150 for each family member applying with you.

In addition to your fully completed and signed application form, you will need to include the following for your application to be valid:

Your passport or other travel document recognized by the competent Greek authorities
A certificate of criminal record from the foreign authorities
A medical certificate from a recognized state or private body
Your travel insurance

Once you’ve submitted your application for your Digital Nomad Visa for Greece, you’ll receive feedback within 10 days to let you know the status of your application. You can typically expect to receive your approved visa from the Greek Ministry of Migration and Asylum within a month, although the Greek government does not provide a specific timeline. Take into account that the timeframe for issuing your visa depends on the processing times of the Ministry.

Can you apply for a Greek Digital Nomad Visa if you are currently in Greece?

If you are already in Greece, you cannot apply for the Digital Nomad Visa from within the country. The visa must be issued by a Greek consulate in your country of residence before you travel.

As of 5 February 2026 (N5275/2026), it is no longer possible to apply for a Digital Nomad Residence Permit while in Greece on a tourist visa or visa waiver. However, if you have entered Greece with a valid Digital Nomad Visa, you can apply locally to extend your stay by obtaining a Digital Nomad Residence Permit (valid for up to two years). Applications are submitted through the Directorate of Residence Permits of the Ministry of Migration and Asylum. For further information and to apply online, you can check out the Ministry’s web page here.

You will need to provide the same supporting documents required for the visa, along with proof of accommodation in Greece (such as a rental agreement or property ownership). The residence permit is valid for two years and comes with a €1,000 application fee, plus €150 for each additional family member.

Pelion: A first-person guide for digital nomads

Picturesque mountain villages, scenic hiking trails, stunning beaches and mo. Located between Thessaloniki and Athens, you’ll find the beautiful region Pelion (also called Pilion). The area has surprised me a lot! Scuba diving, hiking, climbing, swimming, rafting, skiing … there’s something to do for everyone – all year round. I worked remotely from there for two weeks in October and explored the beautiful Pelion mountain in my free time. Now, I would like to share all my tips with you.

Pelion – How to get there?

Pelion is located 4 hours north of Athens and 2 hours south of Thessaloniki. The mountain range belongs to the Greek region of Thessaly, and the largest city is Volos. You can reach Volos by train, car, bus or plane. Volos also has its own airport, but this is only used in summer and only a few flights are available (mainly to/from Israel and England).

Getting to Pelion from Thessaloniki: The airport in Thessaloniki is very well connected. From the airport, you go to the train station and from there you can reach Volos by bus or train in about 3 hours. It costs about 20 euros. From Volos you can rent a car or take a cab to your accommodation.
Getting to Pelion from Athens: From Athens you can take the bus to Volos, it takes about 4-5 hours. By train it takes about the same time. You have to change trains in Larissa and from there you have to take another train for about an hour to Volos. The train tickets cost about 30 euros.

Accommodation

In Pelion, you have the possibility to stay in cute little mountain villages or by the beach in Airbnbs, hotels or hostels. We stayed in the beautiful hotel Selina Centavrus. The hotel is located in the beautiful village of Makrinitsa (more on that later) and has 20 rooms and a dorm. Like all Selinas, the whole property as well as the rooms are super tastefully and stylishly decorated. We had an incredible view over Volos from our room and the beds were super comfortable. We felt at home for two weeks in this beautiful place in the mountains.

They also have a cozy sitting area with games, books, a projector, and a small kitchen. One of my highlights was definitely the incredible breakfast, which we got served every morning in the sun on the beautiful terrace. You could choose between 10 different dishes – everything was always prepared with so much love! And while sipping your freddo cappuccino, you could enjoy the breathtaking view over Pelion, the gulf and Volos. The Selina Centavrus also has a wellness area, at the very top. Perfect to start your (work) day with a workout or some yoga. The staff was great, super sweet and helpful! We will definitely be back 😉

Remote working from Volos or Pelion – How is the internet?

The internet in Volos is good, at about 50 Mbps on average. Downtown you can also find some coworking spaces, e.g. Open Office Volos. The internet in Pelion, or at our place in Makrinitsa … was not the best 😉 That’s simply due to the very old line from Volos. The general wifi in our hotel had a speed ca. 5 Mbps, but there was an external router with about 15 Mbps. We mostly used the hotspots from our cell phones. We definitely recommend buying a local SIM card from Cosmote – this will give you the best reception and the most stable connection. Also, there are some Meetups for Digital Nomads happening in Volos every now and then – just check on Facebook and you’ll find the details about the upcoming events.

Five things you should definitely do on the Pelion peninsula

1. Train ride with the Pelion train “Moutzouris”

This ride with the steam locomotive was definitely one of my highlights – a great experience. Nowadays, the Pelion train runs between the villags of Ano Lechonia and Milies. The train’s only stop is at Ano Gatzea station, from where it travels to Milies. It takes about 90 minutes in total to complete the 15km line. During the ride, you will almost continuously have a spectacular view over the bay of Pagasitikos, gorges, magnificent old bridges, tunnels…. The Pelion Train departs only on weekends, at 10 am from Ano Lechonia and at 3 pm from Milies. Tickets for the round trip are 18 euros. You can book them online beforehand here or buy them at the train station in Volos.

2. Horseback riding

Pelion offers a great landscape for horseback riding! There are some horse farms, so we chose Ifom Greece – a family-run farm located close to Kala Nera. There we went for a ride for two hours. Our ride went through olive plantations, and forests, to the beach where we enjoyed the golden hour (did I mention that this is my favorite time of the day?! :P) . I haven’t ridden in years – highly recommend it, there is something very calming about it … and I mean, look at these pictures… 😉

3. Exploring Pelion’s mountain villages

There are so many cute little mountain villages to explore in Pelion. The most beautiful one, in my opinion, is Makrinitsa, where we lived. The square of the village is huge, where you can visit two ancient plane trees, sip a frappe and take in relaxing vibes of the village. In the bakery, which is located directly on the square, you get the best pies. But you have to be early – when it’s empty, it’s empty and the bakery closes. We really enjoyed drinking a coffee or beer in the Art Café – comfortable sofas and a great view. Regarding food in Makrinitsa, I can highly recommend the Peliades Restaurant. From here, you can enjoy a beautiful sunset and then treat yourself to some really good local food. I can only recommend pasta with lamb and capers.

Milies (the place where you arrive with the Pelion train) is also definitely worth a visit. Here, you also have a big marketplace with a unique church. In the museum, you can learn a lot about the history of Milies. It is also worth visiting the library – there you can admire ancient books.

We had lunch in “The Salkimi” restaurant, which was one of the best meals we had in Pelion. Be sure to order the stuffed zucchini flowers and the zucchini puff – WOW! After a delicious lunch you can have a coffee at the café «’Αννα να ένα Μήλο» (Anna, here is an an apple) where you will definitely be busy looking at all the old signs on the walls. A great place to stay in Milies is this Airbnb – an old family house with a huge living room with a fireplace, a big balcony with amazing views, a garden, and two bedrooms. The owner Eva grew up in Milies and is super sweet and helpful.

4. Explore beaches on the peninsula

Not only mountains but also beaches – and beautiful ones! We were there in October, but it was definitely still warm enough to go swimming. You have a choice of beaches on the Pagasitikos Gulf or the Aegean Sea.

Fakistra beach is unique but be careful… the road is very bad. In case of oncoming traffic, you should keep calm. In summer, the beach is supposed to be very crowded, so I would not recommend it. For the way down, I would recommend proper shoes and not flip-flops.

Mylopotamos beach – a dream! You can park at the top of the road and walk down the small path. At the bottom you’ll find a small beach bar. When the sun is gone, you can just go to the beach to the right of Milopotamos, there you have about 1-2 hours longer sun.

For all Mamma Mia fans – did you know that a scene from the famous movie was filmed in Pelion? It was filmed at Damouchari beach! We were unfortunately not there – but have heard only the best about it.

Another beach worth visiting is Kala Nera, which is located on the southwestern side of the Pelion and offers a unique view of the bay. The promenade invites you to stroll, and invites you to enjoy a beautiful sunset. Best with a cold Mythos beer and a portion of tzatziki – Yamas!

5. Go on some adventurous hikes

Pelion offers over 120 different hiking routes in different levels. The hikes are well-marked. We did a day hike with Giorgos, whose company Cycle and Hike offered different hiking and mountain biking tours. We did a hike from Makrinitsa to Statiages via Portaria back to Makrinitsa, which takes about 2 hours.

I can also recommend the Centaur’s (Kentavros) Path. Pelion is considered the home of the centaurs – half-man, half-horse. The Centaur’s Path starts at the entrance of Portaria village, about 20 minutes from Volos. From there, you walk for about 20 minutes along a small stream over a few bridges up the mountain. You can either go back through the village or walk back down the same way. For me, this place had something magical and very calming. Especially in summer, it is a bit cooler there. Walk through the forest with your eyes open – maybe a centaur will cross your way 😉

Extra tip: Don’t leave Pelion without drinking tsipouro! 😛

Tsipouro is a traditional grape-distilled spirit from Greece – with or without anise. Drinking tsipouro is a gastronomic and cultural tradition of the city of Volos. It is more than just a visit to a tsipouro restaurant or much more than just a way to eat a lot for little money. Tsipouro drinking in Volos is a social event that plays an important role in the lives of the locals. In a typical tsipouradiko, there is no menu – you eat what comes to the table! A small plate with meze… small snacks, mostly fish, but also meat or vegetables – whatever is there. Is comparable to the tapas from Spain. With each tsipouro, a new plate with different meze is served.

Good to know: the more you drink, the “better” the food becomes. In the end, you only pay for the tsipouro, the food is free 😉 Most of the time you pay about 15-20 euros per person. The best places for tsipouro are: Mezen, Flokos, or Παραδοσακό Ουζερί. If you like trying different things, I highly recommend it – I loved it! My recommendation: go with a small group, so you can try more Meze … and drinking the tsipouro becomes more fun 😉

The best season to go (and work remotely from) to Pelion

… ALWAYS! 😉 This area really has something to offer in every season. In summer there are a lot of tourists from Israel and England and the beaches in Pelion can get very crowded. That’s why I would recommend spring or fall for a vacation in Pelion! Especially in autumn, when the leaves shine in all those beautiful red, yellow, and orange tones, the apples, plums, and chestnuts are ripe, the area has a special flair. We were there in October and had only two days of bad weather in two weeks. Sun was shining, it was about 20 degrees and the water was still warm enough for swimming.

Athens: A first-person guide for digital nomads

An after-work stroll through the narrow streets in Anafiotika, enjoying a freddo cappuccino in the sun, ending the evening with a cold Mythos beer and a Greek salad and tzatziki in the cozy neighborhood of Plaka… Athens is much more than the Acropolis. In addition to a collection of historical treasures, the city has many hip neighborhoods, cool bars, restaurants and cafes, cultural centers, and shopping opportunities to offer. Athens has a vibe you have to experience. All of this makes Athens a great place for a short trip, vacation, or a workation in Greece.

I worked remotely from Athens for two weeks – and had plenty of time to explore all corners of the city! Let’s go!

Accommodation in Athens - The agony of choice

As in any big city, you have a huge choice of different types of accommodation. From Airbnbs to hotels, and hostels – it all depends on how long you’re staying and what you want or need for your stay in Athens. I stayed at Selina Theatrou, a hostel with a coworking space. The hostel is just a 7-minute walk from the famous Monastiraki Square and 3 minutes from the Central Market – the location is great! There are different room categories, from standard double rooms to deluxe rooms and dorms.

The Selina in Athens has a very big and super equipped kitchen, a cinema, a small library, a wellness room offering yoga classes, many corners to chill and a coworking space. At Selina’s, you really don’t have to worry about anything. The highlight is definitely the roof terrace, where you can also find the restaurant/bar “The Rooftop Athens”. Breakfast is always served here in the morning, during the day you can order different dishes, and every evening there are events or parties. From this rooftop, you can enjoy an incredible view of Athens and of course the Acropolis. The advantage of staying in a hostel in Athens is of course that you will quickly find like-minded people to hang out with.

Internet and coworking facilities in Athens

The internet connection in Athens is great! However, not all Airbnbs or accommodations have fiber optic internet. If you depend on it, ask beforehand and have a screenshot of a speed test sent to you, that’s what I usually do.

If you can’t or don’t want to work from your accommodation, there are many coworking spaces in Athens. I was super happy with the coworking space at Selina Theatrou, here you can get a table for 10 euros per day.

There are other coworking spaces, for example, “Impact Hub” or “The Cube” to name a few. Of course, Athens also has numerous cafes and bars that are great for working as well (and enjoying a freddo cappuccino :P). You choose – it all depends on what kind of environment you want to work in.

How to meet other travelers, expats or digital nomads

Are you traveling alone or looking to connect with other people with your travel partner? There are plenty of ways to connect with like-minded people in Athens. You can check places like Couchsurfing, Facebook groups, Meetup.com – or in your coworking space or accommodation. At Selina’s, they have a WhatsApp Group for everyone staying there – this makes it super easy to connect.

Getting around Athens - How you get from A to B

Although the city is really huge, everything can be explored pretty well on foot. All sights in Athens can be easily reached on foot. Of course, this is the best way to see and feel the city – and all the different neighborhoods.

However, there are buses, a metro, and a tram that will take you to different parts of the city. It’s very easy to use: you only need one ticket for all means of transportation. Ticket prices are also relatively low, e.g. a single trip costs 1.20 euros (valid for 90 minutes). From the airport to the city center it takes about 40 minutes and the trip costs 9 euros. A cab costs about 50 euros – but depending on when you arrive, it can also be very expensive, because there is a lot of traffic in the city, especially during rush hour.

Athens restaurant tips

Foodies are in the right place in Athens! There is everything here – from small local taverns and cafes to hipster cafes and fancy restaurants with Michelin-star chefs. Here are my recommendations:

Restaurant Oinomageireio Epirus in the central market of Athens. You’ll rarely find tourists here – a real place for locals! Perfect for a hearty lunch. You can look at the counter to see what’s available and try your way through.

If you want to try the best loukoumades (donuts) and bougatsa (Greek pudding in puff pastry) – head to Krinos Café! This café has been around since 1923. Treat yourself to a typical Greek coffee for the full experience!

Galiántra is not a restaurant as you imagine it – much cooler than that! In a small square, you’ll find a street food cart, a few tables, and seating. Decorated with colorful flags and other small details, this place is simply something different. Here you can enjoy delicious street food.

Try traditional pies at Harry’s Kitchen. Watch out – this store is easy to miss. The baker Harry and his wife bake fresh pies every day – for maaaany years. These pies are filled with love – and all sorts of other delicacies, like spinach and cheese, sausage, apple and cinnamon, potatoes, vegetables, etc. A pie costs 2.50 euros and is the perfect snack…

5 Things you should experience in Athens

Visiting the Acropolis is of course a MUST for every stay in Athens, so I’d rather tell you a few insider tips for Athens – so you can discover Athens away from the tourist crowds.

1. Enjoy an incredible view of the Acropolis from Philopappos Hill

Τhis hill is located southwest of the Acropolis and is still an insider tip because the way up there is not very obvious. You need about 15 minutes to climb the 147 m high hill and enjoy a breathtaking view of the Acropolis. We were there during the golden hour and sunset – breathtaking!

2. Explore the different neighborhoods!

Each neighborhood has a charm and special features. My favorites are Exarchia, Plaka & Anafiotika, Keramikos & Metaxourgeio, and Psirri.

3. Shop like a local at the central market

At 7 am, the central market in Athens opens. It is located between Omonia and Monastiraki Square. In this market, you’ll find a huge selection of local products in several halls: Spices, fish, meat, fruit, dried fruit etc. The great thing: there are hardly any tourist stalls, because mainly locals go shopping here. Especially if you are in Athens for a longer time (e.g. for a workation), it is worthwhile for a week’s shopping 😉 You can also find local stores in the streets around the Athens Central Market.

4. Take a food tour in Athens

Greek food remains one of my favorites. Of course, you can taste your way through different dishes by trying out different restaurants and shops – I decided to do a food tour with Greeking.me, our guide Tatialena rocked the tour, there is no other way to say it. From Koulouri (bread rings sprinkled with sesame seeds) to dumplings, cheese, Greek yogurt, wine, raki, bougatsa (sweet pie), loukoumades (donuts), and a biiiig unch with stuffed vine leaves, moussaka etc. What I really liked about the tour was – besides the delicious food – the fact that we also learned a lot about Greek history and got some more tips for Athens. My recommendation: in no case breakfast before!!!

5. Learn about street art in Athens - Away from the tourist crowds!

Athens is full of street art. While walking through the famous areas like Psyrri, Plaka, etc, you’ll see many bigger and smaller pieces of art. Even more fantastic is understanding the message behind all the artwork. I did a street art tour with Alternative Athens. My guide Nikos took me through some “not so famous” neighborhoods of the city and told me a lot about all the artists, artworks, politics, and also Athens in general. Super exciting. I recommend doing such a tour at the beginning of your stay in Athens, so you have enough time to use the tips afterward and you’ll walk through the city with a better view of street art 😉

Athens, a metropolis for a short trip in Greece or a workation … or as a (longer or shorter) stop on your trip as a digital nomad. This vibrant metropolis should definitely be on your bucket list. Paros: A first-hand guide for digital nomads living and working in Paros

Paros is one of those places that, immediately when you arrive, you feel at home. I have to admit, I never considered a Greek island to be more than a family holiday destination – but after spending two weeks in Paros, I realized it’s the ultimate digital nomad destination! Continue reading for a guide on the best things to do in Paros as a digital nomad, including what to see and do, where to stay and eat, how to get there and how to get around.

In recent years, Paros has grown in popularity. An island tucked away in the Cyclades, equally beautiful as its neighbours Santorini or Mykonos, only less crowded. Paros has the iconic white houses with blue doors, winds perfect for water sports and some of the best beaches in Greece. Who wouldn’t want to live and work in that environment?!

Where to live in Paros

Paros has a few towns all worth a visit. Where I recommend you stay during your Paros workaction depends on what you are interested in doing. For a more lively experience, I suggest Naoussa, one of the biggest towns on the island. If you prefer a calmer experience, I suggest the mountain villages Lefkes or Marpissa. If you are more into water sports, I suggest you stay in the southern part of Paros, for example Pounda Bay.

Paros is not a very big island. If you rent a vehicle you can easily get around and get the full Paros experience, wherever you choose to stay.

Choose a coliving / coworking space for a seamless experience

As a digital nomad, you need to take more things into account besides location when you choose your accommodation. To me, it’s important with a proper kitchen, good wi-fi, a desk and preferably an area to socialize and meet other digital nomads.

That said, I can highly recommend Selina Paros – a colive/cowork space where digital nomads have everything they need under the same roof. Selina Paros offers well-sized rooms with desks, proper wi-fi, shared workspaces, a kitchen, a gym (with yoga classes!), a restaurant and bar, a pool and a private beach.

Transportation

How to get to Paros

You can get to Paros either by air or by sea. From Athens, you can catch a flight and be in Paros in 45 minutes. Aegean Airlines is the largest Greek airline and is a great option when booking flights both domestically and internationally.

For shorter trips, I usually prefer to stay on the ground (a great way to reduce your climate footprint!) which is why the ferry route with Blue Star Ferries was the better option for me. The ferry route from Athens to Piraeus took 4 hours, and I spent them working and sipping coffee from the cafe.

How to get around in Paros

As I mentioned above, Paros is not a very big island, but to get around you need a vehicle. You can rent a car, a scooter or an ATV. Which you should choose depends on how long you’re planning to stay in Paros, and whether you’re planning to explore or just relax.

Things to do in Paros

Vilage-hopping

My absolute favorite activity in Paros was renting a car and driving around, visiting all the enchanting villages. I’m not even exaggerating when I say that I think Paros is one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Try kitesurfing

Paros is huge on water sports! From June to September, the winds are perfect, which attracts windsurfers and kitesurfers from all over the world. If you are a surfer, or you want to try, there’s no better place to do so than Paros.

During my time in Paros, I had a two-hour kitesurfing trial with Paros Kite, which I can highly recommend! I had never tried windsurfing or kitesurfing before, but the guys at Paros Kite took good care of me.

Visit Antiparos

Next to Paros lies its little brother Antiparos, a beautiful island mostly known to be the summer getaway for celebrities like Tom Hanks. The boat from Pounta to Antiparos only takes 10 minutes, and costs €1.5 – €2, depending on the season.

Antiparos has beautiful beaches, a coastline filled with coves, a main village equally enchanting as Lefkes or Marpissa and a lively nighttime atmosphere.

My favorite experience in Antiparos was eating dinner at the fairytale-like restaurant Taverna Klimataria. Here you can enjoy delicious Greek food under a bright pink bougainvillea pergola.

Visit Naoussa harbour

The postcard-perfect Naoussa harbour deserves its own time to shine. With wooden boats docked close together, iconic white houses with blue doors and bougainvillea climbing up the walls, narrow cobbled laneways, and octopus drying in the sun… it doesn’t get more Greek than this.

Besides being the most picturesque spot in Paros, Naoussa harbour is also home to some of the island’s best restaurants. In the evening, strings of lights are lit and the whole harbour looks like a fairytale.

Tips: Not far from Naoussa harbour lies Come Back bar, a great place for brunch, lunch or a sunset drink.

Beach-hopping

Paros is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Greece. The most iconic beach in Paros is Kolymbithres beach, with its smooth granite rock formations and crystal-clear, shallow water.

Other beaches well worth a visit are:

Kalogeros (popular for its clay mud that is supposed to make your skin smooth)
Faragas

Athens: My experience of the digital nomad life in Athens

Have you ever considered Athens as your next digital nomad destination? I have to admit, the idea had never crossed my mind before Work from Greece invited me. But I’m eternally grateful they did – I have now found my new favorite European city, and a second home.

Athens is an urban, lively and welcoming city, filled with history, pulse, tradition and vibe – all at the same time. When walking in this city you can, within half an hour, pass ancient monuments near the Acropolis, yearn for the latest fashion on Ermou Street, order a coffee at one of the trendy coworking cafés in Psirri and admire the street art in Keramikos.

We are all aware of Greece as a popular summer holiday destination. But Athens really does have it all covered for a modern, fun and interesting way of living – all year round.

Continue reading for my tips on how to best spend your days as a digital nomad in Athens – and how the city swept me off my feet in just two weeks.

The Athenian culture

What amazed me the most about the city was the lively atmosphere, with people cherishing every moment around the city streets, day and night. The authenticity of the locals – and their loud, expressive and kind way of communicating – welcomed me warmheartedly.

Everywhere I went, I was greeted with a smile – or an interesting story about the history of the area, the food, the street art or the architecture. Since Athens is around 3,400 years old, it’s no wonder there are so many stories to tell.

This Greek way of welcoming their visitors made me feel at home within just a couple of days – a quality I truly value when I choose a place to stay.

Where to live in Athens

Athens is an enormous city that can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming. However, the most popular things to do in Athens are all located within walking distance to each other.

If you want to get the real Athenian vibe, be close to historical monuments and the best restaurants and bars in Athens, these are all great areas to stay in:

Psirri
Keramikos & Gazi
Plaka
Thiseio

As a digital nomad, there are a few things besides location to consider when you choose your accommodation. You need a proper kitchen, good wi-fi, a desk and preferably an area to socialize and meet other digital nomads.

To me, the solution that matches all my requirements is staying at a coliving space. In Athens, I stayed at Selina – Theatrou Athens, and this accommodation had everything I needed. A well-sized room with a desk, proper wi-fi, shared workspaces, a kitchen, a gym (with yoga classes!) and a rooftop with a view of the Acropolis.

Another great option is to rent an Airbnb. Just make sure to read the reviews, especially regarding wi-fi.

Coworking spaces in Athens

As a digital nomad, having a proper place to work is key to success. The most convenient solution, as I mentioned, is to stay at a coliving / coworking space like Selina. Then you have everything you need under the same roof.

What’s great about Athens though, is that even if you don’t have the luxury to have a coworking space in your building, there are lots of other options for you.

Things to do in Athens

Athens has so many secret gems to be discovered. Here I list some of my favorite things to do in Athens.

Discover Athens’ history

Since so many of Athens’ historical monuments are located close to each other, you can easily discover the city’s cultural and historical heart by foot. Just walking around is like visiting an open-air museum.

The Acropolis is one of the most important ancient Greek monuments. Even though you spot the Acropolis from large parts of the city, you can’t leave Athens without paying it a close visit.

The entrance ticket to Acropolis is €20, but if you want to discover more of Athens’ ancient monuments, I recommend that you buy the ticket package for €30. With this ticket you get access to not only the Acropolis but also the Ancient Agora of Athens, the Roman Forum of Athens, Hadrian’s Library and much more.

The Acropolis in all its glory, but what struck me the most about Athens was its modern side, with trendy neighbourhoods like Psirri, Keramikos, Gazi and Koukaki. In these areas, you can enjoy an endless variety of new age meze tavernas, bohemian bars, crafts & design studios and lively rooftops.

Explore the never-ending food scene of Athens

I think we can all agree on this: The Greek food is a reason alone to spend time in Athens, and the restaurant scene is never-ending. Not even Athenians have time to explore the wide selection of restaurants in this city.

Speaking of food: One of the best experiences I had in Athens was a food tour with Be A Greek. During a four-hour tour, a private guide showed me around Athens and made me try incredible local dishes like loukoumades, souvlaki and traditional Greek coffee from the best Athenian restaurants.

One thing is sure: Athenians know how to party! You can’t visit Athens without getting a taste of its famous nightlife. For the ultimate experience of Athens’ vibrant nightlife, I suggest you go to the area around Kolokotroni St, as well as Psirri, Keramikos or Gazi.

Athenians are the masters of rooftop bars, all of them offering a breathtaking view of the Acropolis. The best time to visit a rooftop bar would be for a sunset drink.

Take a street art tour

Athens’ street art culture is extremely vibrant and covers all kinds of urban artistic creations. It started during the socio-economic crisis in the early 2010’s, when street art became a way for Athenians to express themselves. When you start looking, street art is everywhere, from small graffiti art to huge murals made on commission by the city itself.

I can highly recommend taking a street art tour while in Athens. Even if you’re not into art per se, a street art tour is a great way to get to know the city’s modern history!

Hike to Lycabettus Hill

One thing I didn’t know before I went to Athens was that there are so many hills, easily accessible by a hike, from where you get an impressive view of the city, the Acropolis and the sea. Lycabettus Hill is Athens’ highest peak, offering the most impressive view. I went there to admire the sunset, which was truly breathtaking.

To get to Lycabettus Hill you can take the metro to Syntagma. From there it’s a 20-30 minute walk to the peak.

For us, Kalamata, in southern Greece, is a city that fulfils all the prerequisites for both individual and family digital nomadism, with a process of harmonisation between our community and digital nomads that started a while ago and is now bearing fruit.

A seaside city that is ideal for digital nomads

Kalamata is easily accessible, with an airport and highway connections with Athens and into the Peloponnese, and combines a warm climate and activities and attractions with an excellent quality of life and an affordable cost of living.

It beautifully combines mountain and sea and there is a bicycle path that crosses the whole city on a magical route that starts in the historical centre and passes through the main square and a big green park before ending at the beach.

The history of the city begins with Homer and includes Frankish and Turkish occupations before being the city where the 1821 Revolution began and the first city to be liberated from the Ottomans. Today, 200 years later, Kalamata is a modern European city, included in the network of 100 climate-neutral cities in Europe.

Pelion: Discover the mountain air & sweeping views of Pelion as a digital nomad

When you think of taking your digital nomad adventures to Greece, you probably envision the blue tops of churches in Santorini or the Acropolis of Athens. While these destinations are certainly incredible and worth visiting, nomads have been sleeping on one of the country’s best kept secrets: the mountainous region of Pelion.

If fresh mountain air, sweeping views, minimal tourists, incredible nature, delicious food, and quaint villages that belong on postcards sound like your idea of paradise, read on.

Getting there

In the central part of Greece you’ll find Pelion, a mountainous peninsula in the Thessaly region. On a map, you’ll see that it sits roughly midway between Athens and Thessaloniki. This gives you quite a few options when it comes to getting there. There is a small airport near Pelion called Nea Anchialos, but it’s only open in the summer and may be pricier than flying into a major airport like Athens or Thessaloniki. Aegean Airlines is the largest Greek airline and is an affordable and reliable option when booking flights both domestically and internationally.

From the major cities you can easily catch trains to Volos and then take a bus or taxi into your village of choice in the mountains. Alternatively, renting a car is the best way to experience and explore the region fully.

Where to stay

A great base in the Pelion area is Makrinitsa, a picture-perfect village about 20-minutes’ drive from Volos. Here you’ll find Selina Centavrus, a hotel that caters to digital nomads looking for community in an authentic, peaceful setting. If you don’t know about Selina, it is a well-known hospitality brand with a focus on co-living and co-working. They cater to the new generation of travelers and digital nomads and have locations all over the world.

At Selina Centavrus the rooms and common spaces are spread out amongst traditional Greek houses. There are room types for every budget, and many have fireplaces and incredible views. There are lots of great seating areas, a communal kitchen, library, and even a projector for movie night. The breakfast they offer is restaurant-style and you order from a menu. The food is phenomenal, and the chocolate banana pancakes and croque madame are a must.

Yoga classes are held on an upper level of the property that looks out over Volos and the gulf. There’s even a shortcut that takes you straight into Makrinitsa.

You’ll get your steps in staying here, that’s for sure! Don’t expect lightning-speed Wifi because you are in the Greek mountains after all, but the common spaces and coworking room is where you’ll want to go to get your work done.

What to do in Pelion

When you’re not on your laptop, sipping a Greek coffee, and admiring the views, there are lots of wonderful things to do in the area. Pelion is a nature-lovers paradise where you can really immerse yourself in local life and escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. While this list is by no means exhaustive, it’s a great starting point. If you’d like to discover the region with a local who can curate experiences based on your interests, Angeliki of Angeliki Vogdanou Hospitality is the woman you need to call. By the end of your time with her, you will have made a wonderful new friend!

Hike Centaur’s Path

About 2.5 km from Selina you’ll find the trailhead of Centaurs Path, an easy hiking trail that takes you through scenery that’s straight out of a fairytale. According to the myths, Centaurs (half human, half horse) once lived in the Pelion area. It’s a 1.5 km out-and-back trail that takes about 30 minutes to complete and shoots you out near the charming village of Portaria.

Go Village-Hopping

Speaking of villages, Pelion is home to many and they are a photographer’s dream. One of the best things you can do in the area is go village-hopping. Makrinitsa is considered to be the balcony of Pelion because of its incredible views and is not to be missed. Neighboring Portaria is a beautiful traditional village with several restaurants and a small market. Milies is a popular destination for its famous steam train…but more on that shortly. Explore the Local Culinary Scene

If you stay at Selina, you’ll find yourself walking up to Makrinitsa in search of food often. The good news is this village is home to some seriously incredible restaurants that attract people from all over. Some favorites include:

Cardamo
Peliades
Taverna Apolafsi

If you wander over to Portaria, do not miss Kritsa Restaurant in the village’s central square. Here you’ll find some of the best traditional Greek food in the area. The family that owns the restaurant is genuinely warm and welcoming and makes you feel right at home. Kritsa is not the only business they run in the area, however. They also own the nearby Karaiskos Farm, where you’ll find farmhouse accommodation, traditional cooking classes, and farm animals, as well as Aeriko Cafe Bar, which offers the best view in town. A sunset cocktail here is an absolute must!

If you find yourself in the south of Pelion, Ki Opou to Pei Tavern in Lafkos is worth a stop. Their dishes are Greek but with a unique twist.

Olive Oil & Wine Tastings

If you’re a fan of olive oil, you’ll find yourself right at home with Terpsis Experiences. A Pinterest-worthy seating area amidst a grove of olive trees is the perfect place to learn about the production of olive oil in the Pelion region and try several different types yourself. Paired with small bites like bread or fruit, you’ll slowly learn to identify the different flavors, scents, and consistencies.

In addition to the olive grove, the wonderful Patistis family also owns a vineyard in Argalasti where they’ve been farming organically since 1980. The wines are delicious and the vineyard location is absolutely breathtaking. This is an experience not to be missed, and you can learn more about their offerings here.

Unique Pottery Workshop

Not your average pottery workshop! You’ll meet ceramist Christos Giannakopoulos in the beautiful village of Agios Lavrentios and head out to a breathtaking viewpoint. Here you’ll be given blindfolds and a few basic instructions before trying your hand at turning a hunk of clay into a bowl. Christos will play relaxing music, read excerpts from The Axion Esti by the Nobel prize-winner Odysseus Elytis (in Greek!), all while occasionally helping guide you along your bowl-making journey. Paros is known for being quite windy, and as such, it’s an ideal destination for kitesurfing enthusiasts. Selina Paros is a great base for those interested in picking up the hobby as it’s only a short walk from Paros Kite Beach.

Milies Steam Train

This little historic train in Greece takes you along one of the narrowest railway lines in the world. Located in the mountainous Pelion region, not far from the city of Volos, the train took its first journey in 1895. Today, it runs on selected days from April to October. In the summer, it runs on Saturdays and Sundays. It’s known to many as “Moutzouris” which apparently means smudgy in Greek, and is a nod to the black smoke it left behind.

The train leaves Ano Lechonia station at 10:00 am and from Milies station at 15:00, with a 15-minute stop in a village along the way. (Milies has a cute village square that’s good for lunch if you choose to hang out there between trips!) The train crosses stone bridges, takes you through beautiful forests, and has sweeping views of the Aegean Sea.

The total route is 15 km and takes 90 minutes each way. You can book roundtrip tickets for 18 euros or a one way for 10. Tickets can be purchased online at tickets.hellenictrain.gr. The train has three cars and it’s important to note that Car 3 is actually at the front of the train. If you want photos of the whole train ahead of you, make sure to book Car 1!

So what can you expect to spend while staying in Pelion? This of course depends on your activities, preferences, and time of year, but here are some helpful points of reference from the month of September:

Paros: What makes Paros an ideal Greek island for digital nomads in Greece

A remote worker sipping on a cocktail and checking their email on the beach might be a bit of a digital nomad cliché, but who WOULDN’T want to be doing that? If you aspire to recreate this scene for yourself, Paros is the perfect place to do it.

The island is part of the Cyclades isles (hello beautiful Aegean Sea!) and is in close proximity to neighboring Naxos and Antiparos. It has all of the charm you would expect from the popular Greek islands but is generally much quieter and less touristy than nearby Santorini or Mykonos. It’s the perfect balance of lively and authentic, and a popular destination amongst digital nomads for good reason.

Getting there

There are two options when it comes to reaching the island, and in my opinion, they are equally pleasant and affordable. Paros does have its own airport (albeit very small!) so your first option is to fly. Athens is the hub from which everywhere in Greece is easily reached, and a flight from Athens International Airport will have you island-bound in about 45 minutes. Aegean Airlines is the largest Greek airline and is a budget-friendly and dependable option when booking flights both domestically and internationally.

Your second option is to take a ferry from one of the main ports in Athens – Piraeus and Rafina. Blue Star Ferries is the largest ferry company in Greece and serves more than 20 destinations. The ferry journey to Paros takes approximately 3-5 hours depending on boat type/weather/etc.

There is food on board, and if you want to splurge for a business class ticket you’ll have an extra luxurious ride!

An important note for ferry first-timers: you will leave your big luggage in storage down where the cars are held. Lock it up for peace of mind and collect it before disembarking.

Where to stay

A great base on the island is Selina Paros, a hotel in Pounda Bay that is perfectly catered to the digital nomad lifestyle. If you aren’t familiar with Selina, it is a well-known hospitality brand with a focus on co-living and co-working. Their hotels are geared towards the new generation of travelers and digital nomads and you can find locations all over the globe.

In addition to being aesthetically gorgeous and right on the water, Selina Paros offers a dedicated working area, a gorgeous pool and bar/restaurant, communal kitchens for cooking, a small gym, 24-hour reception, and daily events like yoga and themed evening activities. The beautiful common spaces are great for connecting with other nomads and travelers, and there is no shortage of pretty places to chill out or work, both inside and outside by the sea.

The property offers a variety of different room types, from standard doubles to family suites, and some have truly wonderful balcony views of the sea. Depending on your room’s location, the Wifi might not be the best, but in the common areas and even outside the signal is strong!

Fun fact: the hotel is a 5-minute walk to the Antiparos ferry, which makes for the simplest day trip possible!

What to do in Paros

Village-hopping

The villages of Paros are postcard-worthy and I highly suggest visiting as many as you can! These are a few of my favorites:

● Lefkes

Surrounded by mountains, this traditional village, with its whitewashed homes and cute restaurants, is a must-see. It was the first capital of the island and can be explored only by foot. Wandering aimlessly through the narrow streets is a real joy and if you are into photography you will find a plethora of photo spots.

● Marpissa

Another picture-perfect walking village, Marpissa is quaint and full of charm. It’s also full of bougainvillea and cats, which is an added plus in my book. The beautiful thing about visiting this village in September is that it’s super quiet, even in the middle of the day.

● Prodromos

A 5-minute drive from Marpissa is Prodromos, a small and peaceful village up on a hill. It was the perfect place to stop for lunch, and if you get the chance, Kallitechniko Kafenio is the spot. It’s gorgeous, the food is tasty, and the owner is delightful.

● Naoussa

Probably the most famous village on the island, Naoussa is a real stunner. It’s a fishing village located in the northern part of the island, and it is the perfect destination for shopping and dining. The shopping streets give me Mykonos vibes, and the restaurants that surround the marina are lively and inviting. Words only go so far when trying to describe Naoussa, so I’ll let this photo do the talking!

Beaches

The coast of Paros boasts some incredible beaches. Some have smooth, golden sands, while others are characterized by fascinating rock formations and little alcoves. Some are secluded and quiet, while others are served by bars and beach clubs. There really is something for everyone!

Kitesurfing

Visit Antiparos

While there is much to keep you occupied on Paros, the short and cheap ferry ride to Antiparos is pretty hard to resist. This small neighboring island is very beautiful, easy to get around, and home to one very unique attraction!

You can rent a car or a quad on the island, but I found it easiest to get a bus ticket. There’s a big red tourist bus right beside where the ferry lets out, and you can purchase a ticket in cash directly from the bus driver, or grab one from a nearby shop like Oliaros Tours. The bus is 8 euros round trip and you can hop on and off at various locations around the island.

I decided to visit the incredible Cave of Antiparos and the bus left me at 12:10 PM and picked me up an hour later. The cave goes 100 meters deep and requires taking 400 steps. Amazing Stone Age discoveries have been found here, and the stalactites and stalagmites are really incredible. Be sure to check the opening times before you go!

If you’re feeling like a beach day, the bus also stops at various beaches around the island. You might even bump into Tom Hanks who has a house on the island!
